# Inbox

The Inbox gathers your organization's candidate conversations, both SMS and email, into a single list with the most recent activity at the top. Open it from **Inbox** in the sidebar. The sidebar item shows a badge when there are unread candidate messages.

## The conversation list

Each row is one conversation with one candidate. SMS and email threads with the same candidate appear as separate rows.

| Element | What it shows |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Avatar and name | The candidate. A dark avatar with a blue dot and a bold name mean the conversation has unread messages. |
| Channel icon | A speech bubble for SMS, an envelope for email. |
| Unread count | A blue pill with the number of unread messages, shown only when there are any. |
| Preview | The latest message (or, for email, the subject if there's no preview), cut to one line. |
| Time | How long ago the last message arrived, such as "just now", "5m ago", "3h ago", or "2d ago". Older messages show the date. |

The page checks for new messages about every 10 seconds, so replies appear without a reload. A count of the conversations shown appears below the list.

## Filtering and search

Two pills at the top control what you see:

* **Unread** shows only conversations with unread messages. The pill carries the number of unread conversations.
* **All** shows every conversation. This is the default when you open the Inbox.

The **Search candidates…** box narrows the list as you type. It matches the candidate's name and the text of the message preview.

## Reading and replying

Click a conversation to open that candidate's profile on the **Messages** tab, already switched to the right channel (SMS or email). The full thread is there, and you reply from the same place. See [Messaging Candidates](/communication/messaging-candidates) for how the SMS and email views work.

Replies go out on the channel you're looking at: answer an SMS thread with a text, an email thread with an email. To change channels, switch between **SMS** and **Email** at the top of the Messages tab.

> **Note**
>
> If a candidate has opted out of text messages, the SMS view shows **SMS Opted Out** and the message box is disabled. You can still email them.

## Where replies come from

Candidates can reply to anything your organization sends them: messages you write, bulk sends, automated messages such as interview confirmations and reminders, and booking links. Their replies land here and on the candidate's Messages tab, so you don't need to check a separate phone or mailbox.

Some replies are also acted on automatically. For example, when a reminder asks the candidate to confirm or reschedule, their answer updates the interview. See [Reschedules & No-Shows](/interviews/reschedules-and-no-shows).

Teammates on your organization's notification list also get an email when a candidate replies, at most one per conversation per hour. See [Team Notifications](/communication/team-notifications).

## Empty states

| Message | Meaning |
| ----------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **No conversations yet** | Your organization hasn't exchanged any messages with candidates. |
| **You're all caught up** | The **Unread** filter is on and nothing is unread. Click **View all conversations** to switch to **All**. |
| **No matching conversations** | Nothing matches your search. Try a different term. |
